Bangladeshi Food and Culture

The fairs also provide entertainment with cockfights, bullfights, bull races, horse races, etc.

Festivals and celebrations are an integral part of the culture of Bangladesh. Curried dishes of chicken, fish, beef, mutton, or daal (lentil soup) are prepared as accompaniments. Eid prayers are held all over the country on this day, either out in the open or inside mosques. Handicrafts like pottery works, jute works, metalware, textile, etc., are some of the industries that are flourishing in Bangladesh.

Bangladeshi women mostly wear a saree or salwar kameez as both formal and casual attire, while the younger generations have also adopted the western style of jeans and t-shirts. Hindus make up for about 8% of the population, with Buddhists and Christians making up for about 1% each. This festival spans over a period of nine days and is the biggest socio-cultural event for the Hindu community. Biryani, which is a rich rice-based dish, is also served on special occasions as the main course.

Bangladeshi cuisine also has a rich tradition of sweets. It has the fourth largest Muslim population in the world after Indonesia, Pakistan, and India. The most common sweets and desserts are roshogolla, sandesh, rosh malai, phirni, and malapua. In Rajshahi and Rangpur areas, the use of freshwater fish is huge. Certain specialties are gosht bhuna and machher jhol. Over the centuries, the culture of nation has been influenced by Hinduism, Jainism, Islam, Buddhism, and Christianity. Rabindra sangeet, the songs written and composed by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, is also an integral part of the culture of Bangladesh.

Bangladeshi people have a unique attire that is meant to keep them cool in the hot and humid weather of this country.

The men wear kurta during festive occasions, like festivals or weddings. The culture of this country has been shaped by many renowned poets, writers, saints, filmmakers, musicians, and thinkers.

Some food items are popular across entire Bangladesh, while some are regional favorites. The constitution and all the laws of this country are written both in Bengali and English. Great fairs are organized in villages and towns, where various agricultural products, handicrafts, toys, sweets and food products, etc., are sold. Hand-woven silk sarees are a specialty of this country.

Durga Puja is also a festival celebrated widely in Bangladesh. The festival ends with great processions of Goddess Durga’s statues held all over the country.

The culinary and cultural traditions of Bangladesh have close relations with that of the neighboring Bengal and northeast India, with some unique traits of their own. Classical music is closely related to the Hindustani style, while the dance draws influences from other classical dance forms of the Indian subcontinent, especially Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, and Manipuri. These are typically made during festivals and other special occasions, like weddings. People spend their time on this day visiting their relatives, friends, and neighbors. The river Brahmaputra, which meets the Bay of Bengal in Bangladesh, has a large influence on the culture and cuisine of this small nation. These are generally consumed with vegetable, poultry, beef, fish, goat, and mutton curries. Saltwater fish are commonly found in Barisal and Khulna regions, which are also famous for their heavy use of the spice Piper chaba.

Culture

Islam is the largest religion of Bangladesh, with almost 90% population being Muslim. This country also has some people who follow Sufism, as Islam was brought to the country by Sufi saints. The lungi is not considered proper to be worn outside the house, except by the farmers and men from low-income families.. The food can range from sweet to mild or extremely spicy, and it resembles the cuisine of Northern India and Pakistan. The rest of the population is made up of other minority religions. As such, it is celebrated for the victory of good over evil. The sarees come in different varieties, such as silk, georgette, cotton, or designer sarees. Pohela Boishakh, Eid al-Fitr, and Durga Puja are the most widely celebrated festivals, along with the Independence Day and the Language Movement Day.

Eid al-Fitr is the most important festival for the majority of Muslims and has become an integral part of the culture of this nation. Lungi is worn as casual wear, while the formal attire is the same as in western cultures, i.e., shirt and trousers. Mishti doi, or baked yogurt that is sweetened with charred sugar, is eaten between main course and desserts. This similarity is most prominent in its language, music, literature, and dance forms. It also has some similarity with the northeast Indian cuisine, most notably in the way fish is cooked. However, to know the true essence of Bangladesh, you have to actually go there and experience it.

The instruments most commonly used in the folk as well as classical music are flute, drums, ektara (a single-stringed instrument), dotara (double-stringed instrument), and a pair of metal bawls called mandira.

Bengali is the national language of Bangladesh, with over 98% of the population speaking it as their native language. This is also a land rich in folklore, philosophy, and festivals.

Language and Religion

Arts and Crafts

The main course comprises rice and flatbreads, like luchi, porota, naan, roti, etc. Festivals

Bangladesh is also one of the biggest centers of art and crafts in the Indian subcontinent. The Sufi influence on the music of Bangladesh mentioned above can be most prominently seen in Baul, which is a type of folk music. Another native of this small city is the great Sarod player Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, who was born there, but went on to live in Maihar, a small city in central India.

Pohela Boishakh is the first day of the Bengali calendar and is usually celebrated around April 14. It marks the beginning of the harvest season and is celebrated with great enthusiasm all across Bangladesh. Ducks, koel, and pigeons are also eaten in the rural areas. English is also widely spoken by the middle and upper class people, with the legal system and education also making a heavy use of it. Different types of games, like kabaddi and boat racing, are also held on Eid al-Fitr in the rural areas.

The staples of Bangladeshi cuisine are rice and, to a lesser extent, roti (whole wheat flatbread). The nakshi kantha, which is an embroidered quilt, first originated in this country. There is also a huge population, especially in northern Bangladesh, that speaks Assamese, the official language of the neighboring Indian state of Assam.

Mustard and vegetable oils are primarily used for cooking in Bangladesh, along with sunflower oil. This nation also has a rich tradition of folk songs, with the lyrics containing elements of mysticism, spirituality, and devotion.

Folk music also has a recurring theme of love. It was a Muslim country until 1972, when secularism was added in its constitution following its independence from Pakistan. Some citizens also speak indigenous minority languages, such as Tanchangya, Kurux, Sylheti, Rajbanshi, and Oraon Sadri. The most common types of fish eaten in Bangladesh are rui, rohu, katla, magur, hilsa, and chingri. People visit their relatives on this day and celebrate with them with a grand feast. The celebrations span across the country with puja mandaps set up in villages, towns, and cities. This country also has to offer a host of vegetables, such as a variety of gourds, roots and tubers, leafy green vegetables, succulent stalks, citrons and limes, green and purple eggplants, okra, red onions, banana tree stems and flowers, etc.

Bangladeshi culture is similar in many ways to that of neighboring Bengal. Pitha is also a special Bangladeshi sweet made from rice flour and sugar. This region is also famous for its sweets. This country has also given birth to the great Bollywood music composer and singer Sachin Dev Burman, lovingly known as Burman da, who belonged to the royal family of Comilla. It marks the victory of Goddess Durga over the evil demon Mahishasura. Sufi influence in the region goes back centuries, and it can be prominently seen in the musical traditions of this nation.

Social customs like birth of a child, naming ceremony, etc., have their own distinct feel, and different religious groups have their own way of marking these traditions. Rice and fish are traditional favorites with vegetables and lentils also forming a part of their staple diet. The most relished item in this country is the platter of panta ilish, which is a dish made with rice and curried hilsa fish.

Bangladesh is home to classical as well as folk dance forms and music. The aarti, or the prayers, offered during this festival is a spectacular event. Depending on the type of food, ghee is also sometimes used to enhance the flavor

How to bet UFC 200

In fact, Nunes outperforms Tate in every notable performance metric in striking, both offensively and defensively. In an ideal situation, Hunt is capable of delivering some powerful punches of his own, as he has while defending himself from takedowns against prior opponents — even much larger ones. Nunes isn’t a bad upset pick at more than +200, in a fight where we’ll know a lot more after the first round based on whether Tate is successful early with takedowns. Against anyone else, Tate seems to hold her own while on her feet — and especially on the ground, where she pulled off her upset title win over former champion Holly Holm.

Lesnar’s takedown offense is impressive, but in the rush forward he’ll need to survive a few punches, which he hasn’t always been able to do. Hunt is justifiably a slight favorite, but if Lesnar takes the fight to the ground early, he might never give Hunt a chance to work his offensive weapons.

Raw data is provided by Fight Metric, with analysis by Reed Kuhn — author of ” Fightnomics: the Hidden Numbers and Science in Mixed Martial Arts.”

Before Tate became “Cupcake,” she was called “Takedown Tate,” thanks to her wrestling base. Wrestling has always been a valuable skill and equalizer in MMA, but it set Tate up for failure against Ronda Rousey because of Rousey’s dangerous submission skills on the ground. That means Nunes will have a clear advantage at the start of the fight and for as long as it takes for Tate to close the gap and get things to the ground. 8 Mark Hunt (-170) vs Brock Lesnar (+150)

At least on paper, Nunes isn’t bad on the ground, and she is clearly better on her feet. That volatility is compounded here with a drastic stylistic mismatch and further exacerbated by the unknown of Lesnar’s cage readiness after a 1,653-day layoff from the sport. Which favorites are justified and which underdogs have potential? Where does the betting value lie in the night’s top fights?. Other fights show a fairly significant gap between opponents — especially the women’s bantamweight title fight. Both women have submission skills, so it’s likely that whoever gains control on the ground will win those rounds but probably won’t get a finish.

Heavyweight matchups exemplify the volatility in MMA, with a single punch often determining the outcome of a fight, no matter the odds. Neither man should weather much of a storm, but on paper, Hunt’s durability is better. Consider pairing him with heavily favored  TJ Dillashaw in a parlay of high-performing favorites.

Before we consider the betting angles, here is how these competitors stack up in terms of overall fighting effectiveness. Wherever this fights goes, one man will have a huge advantage over the other, but it’s hard to predict how Lesnar’s offense will really look in 2016.

A main card parlay including Tate-Nunes over 1.5 rounds, Edgar-Aldo over 4.5 rounds, Velasquez to win and Lesnar-Hunt to finish inside the distance will return more than 3-to-1.

Let’s begin.

Women’s bantamweight title: champion Miesha Tate (-250) vs. While this fight is unlikely to go the distance, as one man will do enough damage at some point to set up the finish, even the total of 1.5 rounds is a risky limit to test as they both have turned in improbably long fights before. No. Despite the last-minute removal of Jon Jones on a supposed doping violation, there will still be two titles on the line at UFC 200, along with the potential for a last-minute opponent for  Daniel Cormier — either with or without title implications — that could bolster the event. To be even bolder, go with a small play on Nunes by TKO at +375.

Heavyweight main event: No. The best bet here is the “over 4.5 rounds” at -120, which counts on each fighter’s resiliency to force a close decision.

Other fights on the main card have their fair share of star power, with former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez taking on Travis Browne and two former champions in Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo competing for the interim featherweight championship.

The UFC will end its annual International Fight Week and Fan Expo this year with a bang, in the form of one of the biggest milestone fight cards in its 24-year history. The rest of the card is stacked with legends from top to bottom, including eight past or present champions and several potential future contenders.

Velasquez is a -290 favorite, and a glance at the graph above reminds us how effective he is bell to bell — and also notes that Browne has typically taken more punishment than he has delivered. If lines go the other way, Velasquez to win straight up or in a parlay becomes even more affordable. Heavyweights are volatile because of their power, so if you use Velasquez as a parlay anchor, consider a small hedge on Browne by TKO; if the market indeed comes in behind Velasquez, that hedge could pay out more than +400 and mitigate your risk. With so much uncertainty and volatility here, take a small prop on finish, use the “fight ends inside the distance” as parlay fodder, and then sit back and enjoy the spectacle.

Closing lines: Other main card action

Meanwhile, the odds for Edgar-Aldo 2 are tight. The stats also do little to separate the two; they favor Aldo while striking but Edgar when he inevitably tires Aldo out and wins later rounds.

Insider recommends: If any of this weekend’s title fights is oddly in favor of the underdog challenger, at least when looking at the stats, it’s this one. Velasquez has multiple paths to victory, as long as he doesn’t get sloppy and eat a clean punch. 4 Amanda Nunes (+210)

There’s very little separating many of the fighters from their respective opponents in several of the matchups, including the featherweight title fight. Edgar has the momentum behind him, which has pushed him into be the slightest of favorites, but Aldo’s technical striking, combined with his ability to stay on his feet, perfectly suits him in facing Edgar’s forward motion.

Insider recommends: At underdog prices, a prop on Lesnar by TKO at +250 or “inside the distance” at +190 is a nice upset play that is more likely than the odds suggest

12 Olympic Sports That Have Ceased To Exist

In 1908 even less countries had the balls to take the punishment Lacrosse had to offer and only two teams showed up to compete. We give a brief overview of each sport and possible reasons why they are pretty much extinct.

5.Cricket

Yes, Cricket was also once an Olympic sport, but only for a very short time. They should have drug tested those crazy French!

4.Golf

It was not until recently I learned to appreciate watching golf on TV, or live for that matter. Unfortunately, power boating only made one appearance in the Olympics and that was in 1908. The main difference that I can see, is the racquet is 30.5 inches long, which is quite the long racquet. It is fast paced, exciting and let us not forget VIOLENT. Tug-Of-War was an active event in the Olympics in the following years: 1900, 1904, 1906 (Intercalated Games),1908, 1912, 1920

11.Rackets

Rackets is an indoor racquet sport mainly practiced in the United Kingdom. If you translate jeu de paume to english, it literally means ‘game of palm'; those French are so clever when it comes to naming sports! Anyways, this event lasted for one Olympic year, 1908, and then vanished into the abyss never to be spoken of by an English speaking human again.

6.Power Boating

Power boating is another one of the sports that if it made it out of the early 1900s probably would have grown to be a pretty big hit in the modern day. All members of the team grab the rope and when the event begins you pull as hard as possible in an attempt to pull your opponents across the line. As a result of people falling asleep while watching the extremely action packed sport of golf, the event only lasted in the Olympics for two years; 1900 and 1904. Players run up and down a field trying to put a hard rubber ball into the net. It is also a popular event on some TV game shows. The three events were the 8-Meter Class, the Under 60 Foot Class and the Open class. Lacrosse made appearances as a demonstration event in 1928, 1932 and 1948 before completely vanishing from the Olympics.

10.Jeu de paume

Don’t worry, you are not the only one out there who has never heard of Jeu de Paume, I actually had to Google it! Jeu de paume eventually evolved into Tennis, but in its earliest state it was more or less lawn tennis played without racquets. If I never heard of this sport again, I doubt I’d be upset.

Roque is the bastardized American version of Croquet. Because these two sports were only included in the Summer Olympics as demonstrations, they only get ‘honorable mentions’.

Water Skiing

Water Skiing briefly made an appearance in the Olympics in 1972 but only as a demonstration sport. Back in the early 90’s roller hockey was becoming immensely popular, and as a result it had its year in the lime light as a demonstration event at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Or maybe I can’t, and that is probably the reason those responsible for the Olympics axed croquet after its sole appearance in 1900. Maybe one day another power boating event will resurface!

The Summer Olympics draws billions of viewers every four years to watch their country compete in the most competitive sports arena in the world. Belgium and Holland eventually pulled out leaving Great Britain to battle France for the championship! Great Britain wound up winning the two matches and for some reason was only awarded the silver medal, while France was honored with the Bronze.

1.Tug-Of-War

Yes ladies and gentlemen, Tug-Of-War was once an Olympic sport and was part of the track and field athletics program. This sport quickly fizzled out after its sole appearance in the 1908 Olympics when the only Country that brought a team to compete was Great Britain. France managed to clean up all 7 gold medals. The United States was the only team to bring competitors so the game was abolished from the Olympics.

Honorable Mentions

There have been a couple other sports that have popped up, but they only went as far as becoming demonstration sports. Six different water skiing events took place including figure skiing, slalom and skiing for both men and women. Players wore minimal pads and are allowed to hit each other with their sticks. The sport was never consistently an Olympic sport but was an event in 1900, 1908, 1920 and 1924. If you are from Mars and have never heard of Tug-Of-War, I’ll explain it for you. Each team consists of four riders; pretty exciting huh?

12.Roque

8.Croquet

I can just picture the hordes of people lining up to watch an exciting match of Croquet at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Roque is very similar to croquet in that you smack a ball around and try to get it through wickets. It consists of two walls and a variety of different means to hit the ball off these walls. Honestly, what is not to like? Unfortunately, the first year the sport was a competition sport (1904), only three teams showed up to compete. I thought if you won an event, even if there was only two competitors you still won gold, but I guess I don’t know much! As a result of the poor acceptance of Cricket, it never made another appearance in the Olympics.

Rink Hockey

Rink hockey is another way to say Roller hockey. I’m not quite sure why they stopped including this sport, but only 8 teams have ever actually competed. Any sport similar to football, with more violence and less stoppage of play is a great sport in my book. I guess the rest of the world could care less about rackets, so I’m going to stop talking about it.. This sport has such a small following that nobody even knows the score on the only match ever played in Olympic history. Roque only made one appearance in the Olympics which took place in 1904. The sport ceased to exist in the Olympics after its sole appearance in Barcelona.

7.Polo

The sport of royalty made an appearance at five summer Olympics; 1900, 1908, 1920, 1924, and 1936. Basically, you hit the ball with your hand similar to handball or volleyball. You can use your hand, a bat, or some form of racquet. Today, Tug-Of-War is mostly competed in gym classes at elementary schools across North America. If anybody knows somebody on the Olympic committee and can get Rugby brought back do us all a favor and give him/her a shout!

9.Pelote Basque

Pelote basque is a bit of a weird court sport. 10 Competitors showed up to play, nine of them from France and one from Belgium. Two teams arrange on opposite sides of a line in a giant sandbox. If you don’t know what polo is, it is basically a team sport played on horseback where competitors try to drive a wooden or plastic ball into the opponents net using a giant wooden mallet. It seems like I’m not the only one who had a preconceived notion that Golf was not an entertaining sport to watch. There are many interesting Olympic facts but this article is dedicated to remembering the different sports that have passed on to greener pastures. When only four teams showed up to compete (Belgium, Holland, Great Britain and France) there wasn’t exactly the level of competition some would have desired. It is very similar to squash with a few differences. Three events took place and in each event, two competitors started the race but only one finished. The major difference between Roque and Croquet is that Roque is played on a rolled sand court with a permanent boundary and the wickets are permanently anchored to the ground. The only thing we know is that Spain beat France and as a result was awarded the gold medal.

2.Rugby

Rugby, as popular of a sport as it is today was successfully removed from the Olympics after just four appearances. Over the years, the Olympics has picked up many new sports, but it is not to often you hear about the sports that have been put to rest. 3.Lacrosse

This is one sport I’m truly sad is no longer in the Olympics. Cricket made an appearance in the 1900 Olympics but its existence in the Olympics was very short lived. Over the course of the 4 Olympics where Rugby was played, only six teams every competed resulting in a lack of competition. If you pull one member of their team across the line, you win; basically a giant brute strength competition. The name was achieved by removing the first and last letter from Croquet

It should be noted that many fewer MLB games have qualified so far this season (is the whole world using RLM now?), but smaller profits is still profit.Again, these records are for Money Lines only and do not include totals. Finally, NHL sports betting has picked up 148.49 units in two years, and unlike MLB, NHL had four sportsbooks out of the top five gain double-digit units this past season. Sure, using this approach leaves open the possibility of the line turning around and moving back against you, but as you will see in bit, betting as soon as an RLM qualifies has been profitable in every major North American sport such as the last two seasons, so if one line turns around, so be it. The huge problem with this is that the nfl line, ncaaf line or nhl line may have moved too much by that time, and all of the value has been sucked out of the unpopular side.

The highest two-year winning percentage using RLM from the top five books belongs to College Football, which went 480-341-10, 58.5 percent, +95.10 units. Another important recommendation is to use a slow moving (but reliable) sportsbook. This would make Miami +6 the RLM play.

So what causes RLM when the aim of most sportsbooks is to get as close to balanced action on both sides as possible? The answer to this is quite simple: the sharp bettors; the one’s who give sports betting advice. Keep in mind that NCAAB was the most liquid sport in terms of top-five sportbooks however, with not a single sportsbook making the top five both years. Furthermore, they list the RLM records for many individual sportsbook, making it easy to spot which books this system is working at and which books it may be best to ignore.

So what we recommend is to only use the top five each season for each individual sport (in terms of units won). To illustrate, let us say that San Diego Chargers open at -7 over the Miami Dolohins, and over 70 percent of the sports bets placed on the game are on San Diego. Keep an eyes on the top five sportsbooks at Sports Insights though, as NCAAF sports betting has been very liquid in that regard, with only one sportsbook (believe it or not, Bodog) finishing in the top five both years.

Now do the sharps win every single time? Absolutely not! However, they are right more often than they are wrong, so being on the same side as the sharps is a prudent strategy over the long run, and again, the best thing is that there in absolutely no conventional sports handicapping necessary..

So what exactly is reverse line movement? RLM takes place when a large majority of bets are on one team, yet the line moves in the opposite direction. Note that these records are for sides only and do not include totals.

The NFL sports betting is generally considered the toughest sport to beat, yet blindly following this method produced an exceptional 59.2 percent win rate last season, improving the two year record to 328-249-12, 56.8 percent, +59.06 units. Last year was a good RLM season for NFL sports betting (45-29, 60.8 percent, +11.91), but two sportsbooks that were in the top five in NFL RLM in both seasons.

The proper way to make a sports bet using reverse line movement is to place your bet as soon as there is an RLM of one full point (or 10 cents in MLB and NHL) off of the opening line.

Also, games where over 60 percent of the public are on one side, yet there is reverse line movement of at least 10 cents on the Money Line from the opening number at the top five sportsbooks in MLB and NHL sports betting has also been profitable. This is where an important word of caution is in order though. Carib ruled the roost season at 93-66-9, 58.5 percent, +18.55 units after ABC held the penthouse spot in the 2007-08 season.

NBA sports betting has the lowest two-year five-book RLM winning percentage among the 11/10 sports, but then again, every gambler in the world would kill to go 382-301-9, 55.9 percent, +48.90 units, and the 57.5 percent win rate this past season is nothing to sneeze at. The records quoted below are based on the bets being made at the triggering books, so beating the move by a half-point or a few cents now and then would actually make your record even better.

College Basketball sports betting was not too shabby either, with a two-year mark of 492-356-22, 58.0 percent, +91.96 units.

To back this up, our friends over at Prosportsonline.net have tracked the records for games where over 60 percent of the public has been on one side, yet there was reverse line movement of at least one full point from the opening number at the top sportsbooks in NFL, NCAAF, NBA and NCAAB. All of this will be fun to follow (not to mention profitable) when every sport except baseball are going on simultaneously during the winter months.

http://prosportsonline.net. However, instead of the line rising as you might expect, it instead drops to Chargers -6. Quite a few RLM followers watch the moves until almost game time, and then bet accordingly. We tracked the top five books for each of the pointspread sports for the last two years, as as you can see, this strategy has been profitable in every sport. Keep a close eye on Canbet here, as that Australian sportsbook cracked the top five both years.

Thus, following reverse line movements is the same thing a following the smart money. RLM takes place when more money/ sportsbook picks are bet by the small percentage of bettors that are on the unpopular side (the sharps) than is bet by the huge majority of players betting the popular side (the squares)

Is Golf a Sport? Seriously.

I’d prefer some contact, too. Some nondescript LPGA championship is playing on the TV with no sound and one of the fathers tells to me how Lorena Ochoa ought to get more recognition. Hell, a spelling bee is a competition. But “no walking required”? You call that a sport?

That takes me to my final point: Golf is boring. Art galleries compete. “Golf’s easy,” said Summerall. Martin (2001) where the Supreme Court ordered the PGA to allow disabled golfer Casey Martin to use a golf cart in between holes rather than walk. Do you want to see the least amount of physical prowess combined with the greatest dearth of raw emotion? Turn on golf. You want to get a nap in on Sunday afternoon? Turn on golf. . Another asks me if I think Tiger Woods will pass Jack Nicklaus’ hallowed record of winning 18 professional majors – after all, Tiger’s halfway there. How can you call something a sport where being ambulatory is not a basic minimum physical requirement?

Are golfers athletes? Ichiro Suzuki, the fleet Seattle Mariners outfielder, commented on Tiger’s Wood’s athleticism last spring in USA Today: “Tiger is a great golfer, but … Pretzel vendors compete. Looking for that TV show to help the kids get some shut-eye? Turn on golf. when you say athlete, I think of Carl Lewis. The Court supported its decision by finding that whether a golfer walks between holes does not “fundamentally alter the nature” of the game. Athletes are people who demonstrate superior physical skill in the areas of strength, agility and stamina. If she’s an ugly bowler, you are going to be disappointed.” I’ll have to ponder the “ugly bowler” analogy a little longer but I think Ichiro raises a larger question: Is golf a sport?

A “sport” requires athleticism.

Not long ago, I listened to a host on talk radio praise Hall of Fame play-by-play announcer Pat Sumerall for his ability to call any sport on television — even golf. Golf is recreation–something to pass the time. When you talk about (golfers or race-car drivers), I don’t want to see them run. So says PGA Tour v. Computer programming and brain surgery are difficult. So I jiggled the ice in my glass and offered a seasoned perspective: “Seriously guys, do you really consider golfers to be athletes?” I was friendless for the rest of the afternoon.

That, my friends, says it all.

Just because it’s difficult doesn’t mean it’s a sport. There’s got to be at least some running to call it a sport. Just because you compete doesn’t make it a sport either. It’s the same if you were to meet a beautiful girl and go bowling. It is no more a sport than marbles or cat’s cradle.

Golf does not even rise to the level of “a good walk spoiled” because the primary action of walking is not required. Think of the mythological gods and heroes who personified the highest physical virtues: Hermes (speed), Hercules (strength), Aphrodite (stamina). “Nothing happens.”

I’m at birthday party last weekend for my friend’s 5-year old and his buddies find out I’m sports writer. They are not sports
