Previews of the 2015 Spiral Stakes & 2015 Sunland Park Derby

27 and March 9) this colt has undergone shock-wave therapy, which can be used to treat soft-tissue and bone ailments. Was that the case or did Dortmund simply out run him and have more…how do I say this…testicular fortitude?

“He knew he’d had a race last time, but he bounced out of it really well,” Callaghan added. Two, albeit he does possess quite a good bit of early speed and being he won that last race in wire to wire fashion, drawing the #1 post almost assures you he will be “on the engine” once again in this spot….strategically, it makes all the sense in the world for him to fire out of that post and be out there winging it on the early lead.

We will be looking at two more races in this week’s Horse Racing Races of the Week. The first is the 2015 Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati Spiral Stakes on the all weather surface of Turfway Park in Florence, Kentucky on Saturday. It’s about as good as I’ve seen him train since I’ve had him.”

All that being said, let me just add a quick note:

isportswebgerard@yahoo.com

The results were the same…except this time, this horse took a clear lead at the eighth pole and it looked as though he had arch-rival Dortmund exactly where he wanted him. His aggressive gallops prompted rider Paul Eddery to use draw reins (for more leverage).

2) Royal Son- I’m not sure if it was the addition of blinkers or the change in surface (from dirt to synthetic) in his last race, but boy, he absolutely exploded in it. maidens on Jan 16 before improving to come back a little less than a month later and romping maidens while winning by almost seven lengths.

Saturday March 21, 2015

Horses who undergo the shock wave treatment in California must be put on the veterinarian’s list and are excluded from racing for 10 days. Trainer Bill Mott usually has them ready however (19% win clip off a 45 to 90 day layoff), goes first time Lasix and has a solid half mile work last week in tow…threat if he takes to the surface change…..Another Lemon Drop- will be making his synthetic surface debut but was visually impressive to watch in the last 3 ½ furlongs of his last race (Feb 26, Black Gold Stakes at the Fair Grounds) as he made up about seven lengths within that distance…if he can close with a rush like that on the turf, there is a fairly good chance he can do that on the synthetic also…could run well and at what might be some lofty odds as well.

Well bred colt (by Tiznow out of an A.P Indy mare) from the powerhouse Todd Pletcher barn has been rightfully installed (and will probably go off) as the betting favorite.

1) Firing Line- is not only clearly the horse to beat in this race, he is also a very serious 2015 Kentucky Derby contender especially based off last two races.

Callaghan added Firing Line is “an exuberant horse,” but that he’s “definitely gotten a lot more relaxed.” Eddery agreed, saying that Firing Line’s willingness to cooperate with the rider “is 10 times better now than two months ago.”

Plenty of speed signed up in this race which in turn should set him, and that big closing run he possesses, up very well.

Looking back two races ago, (Dec 20) in the Grade:1 Los Alamitos Futurity, this colt battled every step of the way thru wicked fractions (:45.4 and 1:09.3) only to lose a head bob to budding superstar Dortmund while finishing a mile and a sixteenth in a very strong 1:40.4 at 7/2 odds.

“He worked excellent today,” trainer Art Sherman said, “In the final work before Dubai, he looked awesome. He proved much the best in leading every step of the way to spring a five and half length upset in the John Battaglia Stakes at 9-1 over this very racetrack.

This good looking colt by Stormy Atlantic has also shown great versatility throughout his career as he’s run well on the front end, slightly off the pace and coming from well behind as well, so he should be fine with any pace scenario that presents itself on Saturday afternoon.

. …stretches out in distance, steps up in class but should be the on or close to the early lead and may prove hard to catch.

Obviously likes the surface and is in peak form right now…so he should run well on Sunday.

However, as I stated earlier, please take notice there are several other speed horses in this race (including the #3, #4, #12 and possibly the #9 horse), so the likelihood of him getting out there on an uncontested early lead, do not look promising….someone should be running with him early which might make him vulnerable/tired late….now tack on the fact that he’s being asked to go further than he’s ever gone before and you should come up with the recipe for a beaten favorite.

We will also be looking at the 2015 Sunland Park Derby on Sunday, which is a nine furlong contest for three year olds that carries a purse of $800,000 and drew a pair of Kentucky Derby hopefuls in Firing Line and Lord Nelson.

Distance: One and One Eighth Miles

3) Dirt Monster- has been on the board in all seven career starts including his last where he finished less than three lengths behind Where’s the Moon in the Mine That Bird Stakes…gets edge as best of the rest based on consistency alone.

Analysis:

Afterwards, jockey Gary Stephens said “My fault, I moved to early” (meaning he ran out of gas in deep stretch). Though the race is in New Mexico, all states are notified of such actions.

“The last one I worked like him was In Excess,” said Gary Stevens (who will be back aboard on Saturday), referring to the winner in 1991 of the Met Mile, Whitney, and Woodward. Allen Jerkens” width=”140″ height=”175″/>

The great H. “He’s been training awesome. “Today was meant to be easy, to get some air in her. If we wanted to light the board up, we could do that, and she’d be happy to do that if we asked, but that’s not how I train.”

3) Conquest Typhoon- has been on the board in six of seven lifetime starts and, although winless, he’s been on the board in all three synthetic track starts.

Dubai Sky- is intriguing as he’s shown tremendous heart while winning three of his four lifetime starts, including the $100,000 Kitten’s Joy Stakes in his last. Allen Jerkens

Purse; $550,000

“If I knew where to place my horses, Secretariat would have retired with two more wins.” Jerkens used to say.

Analysis

gerard@knightsoftheroundstable.com

However, I’m going to try to beat him in this spot based on three things I saw …one, after running such a huge race his last time out, with a speed figure well above anything else he has run in any of his four previous starts, he is setup to bounce as high as the sky in this spot. Yet another well bred colt (by Pulpit out of a Seeking the Gold mare) but its looking more and more like he’s solely just a very good sprinter….Why Two-has yet to run a bad race in three starts including wiring the field as the 3-10 favorite in the $75,000 Turf Paradise Derby in his last….could better this rating….Malibu Mogul- is 2 for 2 (in sprints) on this track while recording very fast finishing times. Firing Line was due to come off the list Thursday. It was pretty impressive. He had been hospitalized for several weeks with an infection. The mile and one eighth test for three year old carries a $550,000 purse and will be spearheaded by Metaboss.

Twice in the past month (Feb. He was 85.

“It was tough, but you have to draw on the positives,” said Callaghan, “He had run two fantastic races to a proven good horse in Dortmund. “We could have run in the San Felipe if we wanted to, but we always had this race in the back of our mind.”

Just eight days later trainer Henry Rodriguez, who is winning at an astounding 28%, yet is 0 for 15 in graded stakes races, spun him around and entered him in the $100,000 Mine That Bird Stakes (a pre race for this race) where this colt came from behind to win by 2 1/2 at 13-1.

**** Two-time champion Beholder went an easy six furlongs in 1:14 last Friday morning, while still being pointed to the $350,000 Madison Stakes April 4 at Keeneland.

For Three Year Olds

Trainer Simon Callaghan then gave this bay by Line of David (Lion Heart), with a visually high cruising speed, some six weeks off and brought him back in the Feb 7 Robert B. He’s a lot stronger horse right now,” Sherman said. “You want to work in a minute; you think you’ve gone in a minute, and it turns out they went in 57. What happened in that final furlong is debatable as Dortmund wound up re-rallying and was able to put his head in front on the wire.

**** Hall of Fame trainer H. Lewis Stakes (also at a mile and a sixteenth) for a rematch with Dortmund.

Throughout his career Jerkens beat the great Kelso three times and the mighty Secretariat twice.

Since then he’s recorded three consecutive razor sharp works, for a trainer who wins at an outstanding 30% when he runs a horse back who was a beaten favorite his last time out and, perhaps most important, he gets the services of big money rider Mike Smith.

Distance: One and One Eighth Miles

“Everything has been perfect so far,” trainer Richard Mandella said.

**** 2014 Horse of the Year California Chrome had his last serious work last Friday before being sent half way around the world for a run in the $10 million Dubai Word Cup. Out on the track all alone, the big chestnut worked seven furlongs in a sharp 1:23 4/5, after completing the first six furlongs in an eye popping 1:10.4

2015- Record: 17-39 = 44%

Both Tiznow R J and Pain and Misery’s last races were too bad to be true, both/either could bounce back and run well in this spot….Lord Nelson is 3 for 3 in sprints but has yet to hit the board in any race he’s run that were at a one mile or more. Now whenever they want him to go in a minute, I get it in my head that I need to go 1:03.”

Jerkens won meet-leading trainer honors 14 times with four coming in New York and (in 1973) won the Eclipse Award for outstanding trainer.

Moreover, he was beaten less than three lengths (as the betting favorite) to the top pick in the aforementioned El Camino Real Derby but take note….that was his first start in about 10 weeks, so you have to figure with normal improvement, he should be “tighter” for this race.

Firing Line continues to train very well as he’s registered four spirited works since the Robert Lewis (including three at five eights of a mile and of those three, two were in sub 1:00). The elephant in the room is all three wins (and all four starts) have been on the turf, plus this will be this son of Candy Ride’s first race in 56 days. Callaghan said it was done on Firing Line “to cover all the bases.”

Sunland Park

This well bred gelding (Malibu Moon out of stakes winner Aldiza, by A.P Indy) finished a good closing third vs. They were fantastically run races in which he was narrowly beaten.”

2) Where’s the Moon- has improved leaps and bounds in his last three races with all three of those races coincidently coming over this surface.

Chestnut colt by Street Boss has logged three strong works since then which signals to me he is holding his form.

1) Metaboss- looked sensational while coming from the back of the pack to roll by the field on the far outside to win the El Camino Real Derby going away his last time out, which also happened to be his synthetic surface debut.

Jerkens, nicknamed “The Giant Killer” which was a name he didn’t care for, took out his training license in 1950 and got his first winner July 4 of that same year at Aqueduct with a horse named Populace.
